Dahl (Indian Lentils)

Dahl is a traditional dish from India, primarily made with lentils and a variety of spices. It can be enjoyed as a side dish with other meals (like paneer makhani or masala vegetables) or as a main dish, served with the typical “chapatis” (Indian whole wheat bread, here’s a video showing the authentic recipe).
Ingredients
- 250 grams of lentils
- 1 onion
- 2 tomatoes
- 1 garlic clove
- 1/2 teaspoon of garam masala
- 1 teaspoon of cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground coriander seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder or to taste
- A pinch of turmeric
- 5 sprigs of fresh cilantro
- 25 grams of butter
- Salt and pepper
Instructions
- First, peel the tomatoes by placing them in boiling water for about 30 seconds. Cut them into quarters and place them in a pot with a bit of oil. Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, and all the spices. Let everything sauté for a bit until the spices become fragrant. Then, add the lentils, chopped cilantro, salt, pepper, and cover with half a liter of boiling water.
- Cook on medium heat for about 20 to 25 minutes until the lentils are very soft. Once cooked, stir in the butter and mix for about 30 seconds, so the lentils break down slightly, creating a creamy texture.
- This dish, just like paneer makhani, pairs wonderfully with the Indian yogurt sauce, raita, which adds a fresh touch and helps balance the heat of the spices.
